Antibiotics and Sinuses Don’t Mix – Find Out Why

I am constantly reminded by the chronic sinus patients that I see, who are poster children for a “JUST SAY NO TO ANTIBIOTICS” campaign.

As I listen to most of their stories it is as if they all come from the same written novel. They all have a similar beginning, they all have their struggles (which get worse), they go to other doctors and do other research (and follow the same type of medical protocol), many are then convinced that sinus surgery is their answer, others are told that a second or third surgery will help, they go through their pain, they get depressed, they start to feel hopeless and many of aspects of their life become strained. They end-up in my practice because they are miserable and I become the doctor of final desperation and final hope.

Their story starts out with usually a sinus infection or two. They either ask for another antibiotic because the last one didn’t work, or the next time they ask for a stronger one.  The line of reasoning from either the physician or the patient is that this didn’t work, so I’ll try another one. It’s like having a size 11 foot and trying on a size 7 green shoe that didn’t fit, and then trying a new size 7 red shoe, that also didn’t fit.

The story gets worse with additional antibiotics, then layering on steroid nasal sprays, and then even other medications for symptoms of indigestion, fatigue, and even depression. Many are then taking multiple medications and feeling even more miserable. They catch more colds that immediately turn into more infections. Before long they have 2 or more infections a year, many with 6 or 7 a year. Those infections last longer and there isn’t a time that their sinuses aren’t inflamed, the sinus pressure and headaches don’t seem to go away. The pressure behind their eyes makes them just want to close them, and because they can’t sleep and have the post-nasal drip, their sinuses then rule their lives.

The Background Story

I talk about the endless sinus suffering cycle that you may be in right now. Maybe that story or parts of it sound familiar to you.

Antibiotics, acne medicine, and even birth control pills can kill off beneficial bacteria in your G.I. If you think of your life, could you add up the number of times you’ve had an antibiotic or one of these medications? When you were a child you had earaches, strep throat, bronchitis, had injuries, and maybe even pneumonia. As a teenager and then adult, this meant more antibiotics. Then think of how many times you’ve had chicken, beef, or other products that have been treated with antibiotics. They’ve even been found in our water supply.

Over time, especially with repeated uses, antibiotics become less effective, they also continue to create a real imbalance and real issue in our gut. It’s been said that death starts from the gut. My patients are living proof of that as most who come to see me are walking around like zombies.

The fact is that antibiotics are a life-saving drug for life-threatening issues.  The overuse of antibiotics is one of the National Institute of Health’s top 3 global health issues. When you really need an antibiotic, they are ineffective because many people build up an immunity to them. Antibiotics are only effective with bacterial infections, unfortunately they kill off more than the infection, they kill off the “good bacteria” that provides so many health benefits in your G.I. tract (like helping to absorb nutrients into the system, building strong immunity to viruses and infections, keeping a proper pH balance in the body, and building and repairing cells).

Break the Cycle

Antibiotics really have no place for sinus infections. The majority of sinus infections are not bacterial in nature, but are viral or fungal (which antibiotics are ineffective against). There is no way to easily tell whether your sinus infection is viral, bacterial, or fungal, so they’ve be prescribed, just in case the infection is bacterial. Well, only about 5% of sinus infections are bacterial, so that’s just a poor strategy.

Break the cycle and stop using antibiotics. Especially since there is a natural solution that is an anti-viral, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and actually builds your immunity and fortifies your G.I. tract. So why would you take a change on an antibiotic that it is addressing your issue, if the odds are only 5 in 100 that the solution might work and 100 out of 100 that they will cause G.I. distress and over time create a chronic sinus condition along with other chronic symptoms?

If you just have a sinus infection, stop what you’ve been doing and try a new solution. If you’re a chronic sinus sufferer, then you know what I’m talking about. For you, begin a new solution AND you will need to follow a good anti-candida program as well as the 7 other steps to sinus freedom to get your life back.
