Since the first edition of Sinus Survival was written and published (November 1988), we have witnessed the emergence of America's first environmental epidemic--respiratory disease. According to the National Center for Health Statistics, sinusitis (#1), allergies (#4), asthma (#8), and bronchitis (#9) are all among our most common chronic ailments. Thirty years ago this was not the case. Together, these four respiratory diseases afflict more than 92 million people, about 35 percent of our population. Even more startling is the fact that acute sinusitis (sinus infection) may have already replaced the common cold as our most frequent illness. In a research study performed at the University of Virginia in 1993, students who thought they had a cold were evaluated with CT scans -- the most diagnostic test for sinusitis. The scans revealed that 87 percent did not have a simple cold, but in fact had a sinus infection!
